Summary | 0000893: kmod-8188eu fails to install against the CentOS 7.6 kernel
Description | On a fully updated ordinary CentOS 7 system (CentOS Linux release 7.6.1810 (Core)), "yum install kmod-8188eu" fails to satisfy these kernel dependencies: --> Processing Dependency: kernel(wireless_send_event) = 0xa02e7e03 for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_submit_urb) = 0x74c6ac58 for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_reset_device) = 0xddd0084e for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_put_dev) = 0xf709107c for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_kill_urb) = 0xa55bf715 for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_get_dev) = 0x372a41af for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_free_urb) = 0x739aecf4 for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_control_msg) = 0xd04e3a9e for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 --> Processing Dependency: kernel(usb_alloc_urb) = 0x12a4948e for package: kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-4.el7_5.elrepo.x86_64 I'm uploading the full yum output for reference. The kmod-8188eu doesn't get installed, and the kernel cannot make use of the corresponding hardware (an off-the-shelf wifi usb dongle, with a realtek chip). On the CentOS mailing list, Akemi Yagi told me: "That output indicates that that kmod package is built for the EL 7.5 kernel and is not compatible with the current kernel. I suggest you file a request to have the kmod-8188eu rebuilt for EL 7.6". I'm following his advice. If you need any additional info, please tell me what exactly, and I'll try to provide it.

An updated package built for the EL 7.6 kernel has been released to the elrepo-testing repository and is now syncing to our mirrors. kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-5.el7_6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm It may take a while before the package reaches the mirrors. |
|
In case you have not seen it yet, the package is out there now. For example, https://elrepo.org/linux/testing/el7/x86_64/RPMS/kmod-8188eu-4.1.4_6773.20130222-5.el7_6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm |

Ok, I did a yum install of the new kmod, and it does install properly, and the 8188eu module does get loaded successfully, thanks! Just for the record --- after installation I ran into some other problems with it. Namely, the 8188eu works properly only with the wext driver, while NetworkManager uses the new nl80211 driver, which apparently isn't compatible with 8188eu... This is apparently a separate issue, described here: https://www.thelinuxrain.com/articles/getting-realtek-8188eu-wireless-adapters-to-work-in-linux-and-possibly-other-wireless-realtek-chipsets I followed the instructions there, first trying the wicd package, which also failed (for reasons I don't understand). Finally, I tried the manual startup of the wpa_supplicant (as described in the article above), and that finally did work. So the bottomline is: tested the new driver, the wifi connection successfully established (eventually), the hardware works as expected, everything is ok. Feel free to close this bug, and to push the new .rpm to the stable repo, if you wish. Cheers! :-) Marko |

Thanks for the confirmation that the updated driver worked for your hardware. We will promote the package to the main repository. |
