| Summary | 0001563: mlx4 driver for el10 | ||||
| Description | RHEL 10 has removed the mlx4 driver from the kernel, as shown in this release note link: https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_enterprise_linux/10/html/10.0_release_notes/removed-features#removed-features-networking According to Azure documentation, different Azure hosts use different models of Mellanox physical NIC, and therefore Linux automatically determines whether to use the mlx4 or mlx5 driver. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/accelerated-networking-how-it-works Therefore, Azure accelerated networking will not work with RHEL 10 based virtual machines unless an Azure host with mlx5 (instead of mlx4) driver is used, and this seems to be random. Would be great if mlx4 driver would be available in el10 as well, since Azure mlx4 based hardware is still in use. Thanks | ||||

@ap75 While we are working on the kmod package, you may want to test-install our kernel-ml. The mlx4 driver is enabled there. |

I have built kmod-mlx4 for el10 and have uploaded packages to our testing repository. The following should be available on our mirror sites shortly: kmod-mlx4-4.0-1.el10_0.elrepo.x86_64.rpm kmod-mlx4-4.0-1.el10_0.elrepo.src.rpm Please install and test with: dnf --enablerepo=elrepo-testing install kmod-mlx4 and please report back if the driver works for you. Thanks. |

@pperry The kmod-mlx4 for el10 works as well, please see below: 1. before installing kmod-mlx4
[root@testvm ~]# dmesg | grep mlx4 [root@testvm ~]# [root@testvm ~]# ethtool -S eth0 | grep ' vf_' vf_rx_packets: 0 vf_rx_bytes: 0 vf_tx_packets: 0 vf_tx_bytes: 0 vf_tx_dropped: 0 [root@testvm ~]#
2. after installing kmod-mlx4
[root@testvm ~]# dmesg | grep mlx4 [ 8.418623] mlx4_core: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. Thank you very much for this. Regards, |

@ap75 Thank you for the feedback. I'll move kmod-mlx4 from testing to the main repo now. The the module stops working after RHEL updates (e.g, 10.0 to 10.1), please let us know as it may require a rebuild for newer kernel series. |
