Summary0001597: OCFS2 support in EL9/10 kernel-ml/lt
DescriptionHello,

Is it possible to enable support for OCFS2 in your kernels, please?

Much needed for shared block storage, big demand now from VMWare "refugees" migrating onto EL/KVM and needing to reuse their block storage (FC, DAS, ISCSI, NVMEoTCP etc).

ocfs2-tools also required for proper functionality, but that can be "backported" or simply copied from Oracle Linux since afaik OCFS2 is mainly their baby.

We will enable CONFIG_OCFS2_FS in the next update to our kernels.

@tqhoang

Could you take a look at this and see if a kmod can be built?

Yes, this looks like it can be done along with the ocfs2-tools.

@Nux

As we talked anout in #elrepo, our kmods are signed with our SB-key. So if your systems are SB-enabled, using a kmod would be the only option for you.

@Nux

For a kmod for stock RHEL kernels, can you take a look at the Kconfig file for OCFS2 and let me know if you need "OCFS2 Userspace Clustering" (OCFS2_FS_USERSPACE_CLUSTER)? It's the only option that requires additional modules...namely DLM. Reason I ask is because DLM is being a little difficult to build out-of-tree.

@tqhoang

Thanks for picking this up.
If OCFS2_FS_USERSPACE_CLUSTER is too complicated we can leave it out, afaik it's only needed if you want to offload cluster management to the likes of corosync/pacemaker. /fingerscrossed

@Nux

I have the following ocfs2 packages uploading to our testing repo.

For EL 10.2 (based on kernel 6.12.94)
kmod-ocfs2-0.0-1.el10_2.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
kmod-ocfs2-0.0-1.el10_2.elrepo.src.rpm

For EL 9.8 (based on kernel 6.6.143)
kmod-ocfs2-0.0-1.el9_8.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
kmod-ocfs2-0.0-1.el9_8.elrepo.src.rpm

For now, you will need to install the ocfs2-tools from Oracle. Please let us know if these are working.

OCFS2_FS is now enabled in kernel-ml-7.1.2-1 (el8|el9|el10).

Thanks all, I tested the kmods on Alma9 and it worked fine with the binaries from Oracle Linux!

I also tried the kernel-ml, but it looks like the module is missing, or perhaps there's some sort of conflict with the kmods?

~]# uname -sr
Linux 7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64

~]# modprobe ocfs2
modprobe: FATAL: Module ocfs2 not found in directory /lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64

Completion, when I meant "binaries" above, I meant the ocfs2-tools from OL9, of course.

Another one, the directory for ocfs2 seems present, but no actual files in it, there are some dirs, but all emtpy:

~]# ls -al /lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/
total 4
drwxr-xr-x. 5 root root 45 Jul 3 22:26 .
drwxr-xr-x. 39 root root 4096 Jul 3 22:26 ..
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 6 Jun 27 17:58 cluster
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 6 Jun 27 17:58 dlm
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 6 Jun 27 17:58 dlmfs

Turns out ocfs2-related modules are in the kernel-ml-modules-extra package.

$ rpm -qpl kernel-ml-modules-extra-7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64.rpm | grep -i ocfs

/lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/cluster/ocfs2_nodemanager.ko.xz
/lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/dlm/ocfs2_dlm.ko.xz
/lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/dlmfs/ocfs2_dlmfs.ko.xz
/lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/ocfs2.ko.xz
/lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/ocfs2_stack_o2cb.ko.xz
/lib/modules/7.1.2-1.el9.elrepo.aarch64/kernel/fs/ocfs2/ocfs2_stack_user.ko.xz

It seems to be working, so from superficial testing both kmod and kernel-ml are working, top job, folks! Thank you.

@Nux - We don't get older...just wiser. ;)

Thanks for testing the kmod on EL9. Were you able to test the kmod for El10?

BTW there was an upstream patch titled "ocfs2: reject oversized group bitmap descriptors". I'm going to hold off updating our kmods in case there are more patches in-queue.

Not as yet, but should do this coming week.

I'm gonna have to take a rain cheque with the testing on EL10 as life has suddenly got busier, but should be able to confirm in September at the latest.

No problem. I'll keep the kmods in testing until you have time to revisit.

@Nux - Will you have a chance to test the kmod-ocfs2 for EL10?

Also there have been a considerable number of patches to the ocfs2 filesystem in the upstream kernels since June. I'd like to just confirm we have a working baseline before adding in more patches.

@tqhoang Very much of interest, but lagging behind with testing. I'll do my best to do more testing in November.
Thanks for tracking this.
