Summary0000907: Updating kmod-nvidia-340xx gives blank screen
DescriptionI have a Dell T3400 fitted with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 graphics card and running fully updated CentOS 7.6.180. I have successfully used the elrepo Nvidia drivers before but today yum advised me that there was an update available for kmod-nvidia-340xx to version 340.107-2 and so I installed this and its dependencies with no errors reported.

However, when I rebooted, instead of the normal login screen, all I got was a totally blank black screen. I rebooted into runlevel 3 and uninstalled the elrepo drive and then successfully rebooted into runlevel 5 using the native nouveau driver. Just to check, I booted into runlevel 3 again, reinstalled the elrepo driver and its dependencies and then rebooted but again got a blank screen
Additional InformationThe kernel I am running is the latest CentOS standard kernel, version 3.10.0-957.5.1 and yum reports that the system is fully up to date. Previous versions of the kmod-nvidia-340xx driver have worked Ok on this machine.

Thanks for the report.

Are you able to provide any logs from Xorg?

I was not convinced this package update would work on el7.6 when I updated it:

https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-March/171796.html

but the user reported the updated packages seemed to work here:

https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2019-March/171812.html

So far I have one report it works, and one it doesn't. I shall keep an open mind for now :-)

I reinstalled kmod-nvidia-340xx from runlevel 3, rebooted and got the blank screen again. I then logged in remotely with ssh and copied the Xorg.0.log file from /var/log to another location. This is the file I've now uploaded here.

Hope this helps:-)

I've just installed the previous version of kmod-nvidia-340xx-340.107-2 (31/10.2018) from one of the elrepo archive mirrors along with the associated nvidia-x11-drv-340xx-340.107-1 package (13/7/2018) and confirmed that it works just fine. In case it helps, I've uploaded the Xorg log file for this previous version with the filename Xorg.0.log.2

Thanks for uploading the logs. There is nothing that jumps out at me, in both cases the nvidia driver appears to be loaded.

I am fairly certain the issue relates to the older nvidia-340 series driver not supporting GLVND. What has confused me is the previous report by the original user that it was working.

I will move these packages out of the main repo and back into testing until we can confirm their status.

If the old packages work for you, keep using them for now.

Why did you change anything in the first place? As the 340 series isn't glvnd enabled, the old scheme with /usr/lib64/nvidia and /etc/ld.so.conf.d is still the right way to go.

Because rhel7.6 shipped with libglvnd packages that contain files that would conflict with files in the nvidia-x11-drv package. There were reports that our nvidia packages were being pulled in by yum to meet certain dependencies on systems which didn't have nvidia hardware, rather than the distro libglvnd packages.

When more than one available package meets a dependency, yum has to start making arbitrary choices as to which is the best package.

If you don't want nvidia-x11-drv-340xx pulled in as a provider of (for example) libGL.so.1, then I'd say nvidia-x11-drv-340xx simply shouldn't provide libGL.so.1. This is what I suggested here: https://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=882

What you cannot do is simply not packaging Nvidia's libGL.so.1. It's a vital piece of their (pre-glvnd) driver stack.

I agree, you are correct.

I will reinstate the original package and add filters for the libs that conflict.

Any reason to filter everything from the requires/provides? I don't think we need to filter libnvidia-*, just those files that are provided by the new libglvnd packages?

Updated packages are available in the testing repository, and are currently syncing to the mirror sites:

nvidia-x11-drv-340xx-340.107-3.el7_6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
nvidia-x11-drv-340xx-32bit-340.107-3.el7_6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

Hopefully this fill fix the issue with the 340.xx legacy release.

For the sanity of the rpm database, the filter suggested also filters out all libraries private to Nvidia's driver stack on which no other package can ever depend. Some fedora guidelines called this good practice. :)

To illustrate this, the current testing package has these Provides, which no other package can ever require:

libnvidia-cfg.so.1()(64bit)
libnvidia-compiler.so.340.107()(64bit)
libnvidia-eglcore.so.340.107()(64bit)
libnvidia-glcore.so.340.107()(64bit)
libnvidia-glsi.so.340.107()(64bit)
libnvidia-opencl.so.1()(64bit)
libnvidia-tls.so.340.107()(64bit)
libvdpau_nvidia.so.1()(64bit)

Plus:

libOpenCL.so.1()(64bit)

If you want to package Nvidia's libOpenCL.so.1, you also shouldn't provide it. It's in epel's ocl-icd and a lot of people have epel enabled.

I've just uninstalled kmod-nvidia-340xx and nvidia-x11-drv-340xx and then installed the new versions from the testing repo and so far everything seems to be fine.

Is there any other information you need from me to confirm that the problem is sorted?

Thanks for all your efforts.
