Hi,

I have no plans to do this package at present. I don't have the hardware to test it nor do I have the time nor incentive to maintain it.

I'm looking for someone, preferably an AMD/ATI user, to step up and take on this/these packages. We can provide technical assistance and access to build resources.

Any volunteers?

We now have a new maintainer of the AMD/ATI (fglrx) driver. Please welcome Manuel Wolfshant (wolfy) !

An updated driver set that supports EL7 has just been released to the elrepo-testing repository:

I have just installed the package on centos 7
A crash happened in the post installation stage. I also got a warning that I need to remove xorg-x11-glamor.
After reboot, X server didn't work unless I add "nomodeset" to kernel boot options as mentioned here https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=47494#p206508

>A crash happened in the post installation stage. I also got a warning that I need to remove xorg-x11-glamor.
The warning comes from the preinstall stage of fglrx-x11-drv, so this part executed sucessfully

>After reboot, X server didn't work unless I add "nomodeset" to kernel boot options as mentioned here https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=47494#p206508 [^]
1. did "radeon.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=radeon" get added to the kernel line ?
2. if it did not, can you please verify if replacing "nomodeset" with "radeon.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=radeon" leads to a functional X server ? Those paramaters worked on the systems I could test, but maybe it's not something valid for all chipsets

Also, can you please perform the following test, which will help identifying the command which caused the crash ?
1. run
 rpm -e --nodeps fglrx-x11-drv
this will remove the video driver without removing the associated kernel module
2. run
 rpm -i --noscripts fglrx-x11-drv-14.9-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
which will install the video driver without executing the pre- and post-install scripts
3. run
 rpm -qp --scripts fglrx-x11-drv-14.9-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64.rpm |grep postinstall -A33|tail -31|sed -e "s/\&>\/dev\/null//g"
and then execute one by one, manually, the commands that get displayed. This way we'll find out which command crashed on your system.

Wolfy,

I found I had to do things a little differently in el7 compared to my el6 packages. In the equivalent nvidia package (same problem, prevent the nouveau kernel driver from loading so the nvidia driver can load), I found we need to disable nouveau for all new kernels in /etc/default/grub. This prevents removal of grub kernel boot parameters when subsequently running grub2-mkconfig.

The commit is here:

https://github.com/elrepo/packages/commit/dc72f0446a8d11a4dd41823beb31cdefe97c76d8

I also resorted to updating the initramfs image for all kABI compatible kernels to add the nvidia driver (the system seems to do this anyway for the current kernel so we might as well do it for all compatible kernels) which ensures the driver can load at boot, and that the nouveau driver is also blacklisted in the initramfs image.

The commit for this is here:

https://github.com/elrepo/packages/commit/e7eaf05a55f30b6bb336d48a0dea2f0f703d5213

I'd recommend you do likewise for the fglrx / radeon drivers.

The current nvidia spec file, for comparison is at:

https://github.com/elrepo/packages/blob/master/nvidia-x11-drv/el7/nvidia-x11-drv.spec

Either approach works (blacklisting through GRUB or through blacklist.conf/initramfs) but I decided to double up to ensure there is no way the nouveau (or radeon) driver can load. Also, when I was developing the package, and these methods, some aspects were not working correctly due to bugs in dracut, the kernel scripts and various other packages in the RHEL beta and early releases so we went for the overkill approach using both methods for guaranteed success.

Anyway, maybe/hopefully you will find that useful??

Wolfy,

I was able to get fglrx-x11-drv-14.9-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 to work by doing the following:

1. I started with working installation with no Xorg.conf file.

2. I uninstalled xorg-x11-glamor and xorg-x11-drv-ati. I'm not sure this was required.

3. Install fglrx-x11-drv from elrepo-testing.

4. Delete /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so. It was preventing /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/fglrx/libglx.so from loading.

5. Edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/atieventsd and change DAEMONOPTS="" to DAEMONOPTS="--pidfile /var/run/atieventsd.pid". systemd waits 5 minutes for this file to appear, and it doesn't without this.

Hope this helps!

Yes, It is enough. I'm sorry. Indeed, It was only the first boot which failed as if this option is not specified. I don't know why.

I reinstalled CentOS 7, updated it and installed the packages (without crashes) but failed to make the driver work again.
Then I tried Abraham's suggestions above and it seems working now (Unexpected, because it worked without applying them in the previous installation).- Thanks Abraham

Note: My laptop has Radeon HD 7660G + 7600M dual graphics. While xorg.conf in Ubuntu contains two device sections for each pci card, I only got one section in CentOS.

@all: sorry for the late reply and lack for reaction. $WORK duties prevent me from doing almost anything else.

@pperry: fglrx-x11-drv-14.9-1 already implements all the ideas you've suggested. I've shamelessly copied / adapted from your nvidia spec when creating the one for fglrx

@abe:
- removing glamor ( and xorg-x11-drv-ati ) seems to be mandatory, otherwise the experience varies from crashes to no X.
- I'll try investigate your remark about /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so vs /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/fglrx/libglx.so . I have to reinstall CentOS7 on a suitable machine .. and I just got hold of one.

@waraqa:
- thank you for investigating. At install time ( in %post ) the package runs aticonfig --initial and creates a default xorg.conf. What you get inside that file is (probably) what the application detects as default video adapter. If you have multiple adapters, you could experiment with the parameters described by aticonfig --help below the "Multiple display adapter options" paragraph. I have no hardware to experiment with such a configuration so unfortunately I cannot help too much.
- could it be that fglrx did not work after reinstalling the system because you did not disable glamor prior to testing ? As I said above, in my experience unless disabling glamor , the binary drivers from ATI do not work

@abe: I have to verify on a system running CentOS7, but I have a strong feeling that your recommended fix regarding atieventsd and DAEMONOPTS is incorrect. The init script file has:

DAEMONOPTS=""

start() {
echo -n $"Starting ATI External Events Daemon: "
    daemon /usr/sbin/atieventsd $DAEMONOPTS

As you can see DAEMONOPTS is passed as argument to atieventsd which does not know about --pidfile which should be used as argument for the "daemon" function.

No, I have removed glamor package. Maybe the cause of the problem is xorg-x11-server-Xorg because it is obsoleting xorg-x11-glamor in Fedora and it includes /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

FLGRX 4.12 has been released. Will it be packaged?

Thing is that in all my experiments, "our" (i.e. the version of fglrx shipped by elrepo's RPM) gets loaded, overriding /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

Assuming you meant 14.12, yes, I will try to package it one of these days. However please bare with me, it's a holiday period and I try to recover after a few long and tiresome weeks at work. With more to come after the New Year...

I see. Well, according to your log, the fglrx driver is not loaded at all.

Please verify if /etc/X11/xorg.conf specifies fglrx as driver ; if it is not included -- and I suspect it is not, only intel is - try to rerun
    aticonfig --initial

In the end you should have in this file a Device section, something similar to:

     Section "Device"
        Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
        Driver "fglrx"
        Option "Monitor-DFP1" "0-DFP1"
        BusID "PCI:0:1:0"
     EndSection
associating the fglrx driver with the display.
In your case you'd probably have LVDS1 as monitor and PCI:1:0:0 as value for BusID.

It is very odd because http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86 claims that AMD Radeon™ HD 7000M Series and HD 6000M Series are supported. It would be interesting if you could test the packages for fglrx v15.9 that are already shipped in the EL6 branch of ElRepo.

However if you really need an older version ( 14.12 or older ) I am afraid I do not have the time to rebuild. You have two options to rebuild yourself:
a) download the 2 source packages from wdl.lug.ro/fglrx,
or
b) go to https://github.com/elrepo/packages/tree/master/fglrx-kmod/el7 and https://github.com/elrepo/packages/tree/master/fglrx-x11-drv/el7 and retrieve the files from over there, I have pushed to github everything that was used for building the packages that you have tested.
In both cases you'll need to
- adjust the SPEC and use the 14.12 drivers instead of 15.9
- download the original drivers from http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=Linux%20x86 ( for 14.x) or http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Linux+x86 for the current version

As a separate note it's normal that, as aticonfig does not see your adapter, the modified xorg.conf was not automatically generated when you installed the package.
