Summary0000758: kernel-ml version 4.12.2 doest not boot on VM
DescriptionHi,

I have my Centos running with 4.11.8-1 kernel-ml stable kernel. I installed kernel-ml latest stable version: 4.12.2 and it does not boot properly. I also tried compiling custom kernel with CONFIG_VFIO_NOIOMMU=y. The later is always reproducible. The baseline kernel-ml 4.12.2 booted for me only once but now I havent seen it.

I had to fall back to 4.11.8 kernel-ml for my VM OS. This works always and I am fine with it.
Additional InformationI want CONFIG_VFIO_NOIOMMU=y support that's why I am compiling custom kernel but with this configuration my VM never boots. However my same custom kernel with 4.11.8 works well. Both of the VM's I have upgraded from Centos 7.3

This is quite urgent.

When you say "does not boot", what exactly happens? Do you see any error message? Any hint about where the boot process fails? Which virtualization method are you using? KVM, virtualbox, etc...

Because no one else so far has reported booting issues with the latest kernel-ml, we need to know how to reproduce the problem.

Sorry I was not clear on my first comment. My host running with 4.11.8 kernel-ml stable kernel.
I installed VM using virt-manager which also runs kernel-ml 4.11.8 kernel-ml stable kernel. Both my host and VM kernls are upgraded from Centos 7.3 distribution. Everything works fine with this configuration.

Two days back I installed 4.12.2 kernel-ml on my same VM. After installation 4.12.2, VM does not boots properly. The boot sequence just hangs. I can only see the graphical interface and was unable to switch to command line boot sequence logs. As far as I remember this kernel boots onve succesfully but after that it never works.

I am able to reproduce this problem in my new VM as well where I installed 4.12.2 kernel-ml after installing Centos 7.3.

In addition to above kernels I also have my custom kernel where I enable CONFIG_VFIO_NOIOMMU=y in VM. I have done this in 4.11.8 kernel-ml and 4.12.2 kernel-ml as well. The former kernel works seamless and no problem I faced from last 2 weeks. However my custom VM kernel-ml 4.12.2 never boots and it hangs while booting. Same Symptom as I explained earlier.

I also want to add that my host has Intel VT-D enabled and kernel is booted with intel_iommu=on. This is because I do PCI passthrough of my NIC to same VM

@nsaxena1

kernel-ml is now at 4.14. Does this have the same issue?
