Summary0000751: Request for drbd 9
DescriptionHi, sorry don't know if this is the right place. I have been using drbd 9 from testing repo and is working out quite well. What are your plans on supporting this in default repo and what about future releases (ie 9.0.8 just came out)?
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Hi,

Based upon your feedback, I have promoted the latest kmod-drbd90 and drbd90-utils packages to the main repository from testing.

Normally once we have received some feedback that the packages work as expected we are happy to promote them.

With regard to future releases, we are happy to try to maintain these as long as we have some help / assistance from community members / users as we don't use these packages ourselves. Specifically it would be nice if folks could advise us when new releases come out (by requesting updates), notify us of any upstream issues / documentation we should be aware of and be prepared to help test packages from the testing repository.

I will try to update kmod-drbd90 to 9.0.8 in the next few days and will post back here once available for testing.

If someone who is actually using these packages would like to adopt them and take over maintaining them, we would be more than willing to welcome new contributors to the team.

I have built kmod-drbd90-9.0.8-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64.rpm and released it to the elrepo testing repository. Files are currently syncing to the mirrors and should show up shortly.

Please would you test and provide feedback. If the package works as expected for you then I'm happy to promote to the main repository.

Thanks

I am trialling this on a box and it appears to be working fine.
I have compiled a few kernel modules before but get confused, this was compiled for kernel-3.10.0-514.el7.x86_64 but it's working fine on my box with kernel 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64. How come it's working?

Red Hat use a stable kernel (kABI) that does not change as part of their Enterprise Linux kernel. In theory, this allows developers to develop kernel modules that will work seamlessly across all kernel releases.

However, in reality some bits do change but normally only at minor point release updates, so a kernel module compiled against the RHEL7.3 kernel (3.10.0-514.el7.x86_64) should work seamlessly for all RHEL7.3 kernels. It may also work for future point releases (e.g, RHEL7.4, but this is not guaranteed).

In short, this is the beauty of Enterprise Linux :-)

Thanks for the feedback. I will promote the package to the main repository and close this bug as fixed. If you have any further issues, please don't hesitate to open a fresh bug
