| Summary | 0000057: sk98lin 10.84.3.3 kernel panic | |||||||||||
| Description |
I'm using the kmod-sk98lin 10.84.3.3 kernel module. Kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5. Centos 5. It caused the kernel to panic a few nights ago. The panic screen is attached. Let me know if you need anything else. |

Looking at the captured kernel panic screen I can see that the sk98lin driver code was executing at the time the panic occurred. We are now into a somewhat grey area for the ELRepo Project is just the packager / distributor of that driver -- the actual source code is provided by the MarvellĀ® Technology Group Ltd. $ rpm -qip sk98*.src.rpm | grep URL URL : http://www.marvell.com/ [^] There are two consecutive steps that I suggest you try: (1) Update your kernel to the currently supported CentOS 5.4 version, which is (as of the date of this note) 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (2) If, with the kernel referenced in (1) above, you eventually have another panic that is attributable to the sk98lin driver then please update your kernel to the currently supported RHEL 5.5 version. Pre-release versions of kernel-2.6.18-194.el5 for CentOS 5.5 can currently be obtained from http://www.centos.toracat.org/ajb/kernel/el5/ [^] If you can still show that the sk98lin driver causes an occasional kernel panic when running the current Enterprise Linux 5.5 kernel (-194.el5), then this issue should be reported to Marvell Customer Support (http://www.marvell.com/support.html). [^] Hopefully a revised driver would then be forthcoming -- which we (the ELRepo Project) will then build and distribute. |

It could be useful for users of the ELRepo project to also provide older versions of drivers (kmod packages) so that users can determine since what version (if one) the problem started to occur. If the problem is easy to reproduce and we would have older or newer versions available, then the above rules of thumb become: - try latest kernel for your release - try latest kernel from upstream's latest release - try newer driver version from elrepo-testing, if any - try older driver version(s), if any Depending on the outcome, report to this issue tracker, to upstream (kernel) provider and to the provider of the driver (manufacturer ?). |

Older versions should still be available. For example, I see kmod-sk98lin-10.70.7.3-2.el5.elrepo is still available in the main repo. |

I have reported the issue to Marvell support. I'm now using kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5, and will advise if it crashes again. |

Crash occurs with latest kernel: 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 Will now try older driver: kmod-sk98lin-10.70.7.3-2.el5.elrepo |
