@JPilk Could you confirm or try the following? The last "good" kernel-lt was -236. The issue starts with the -237 kernel. The trouble seems to be associated with GUI. Can you boot the system in text mode without any issue? Can you add "nomodeset i915.modeset=0" to the kernel parameters and see what happens? |
I tried removing the 'rhgb quiet' parameters earlier, but it reverted to graphical node before the problem occurred. Will try the others. |
I have tried booting lt-238 with 'rhgb quiet' replaced by nomodeset and i915.modeset=0, both separately and together. All allowed login on lower-than-normal-resolution graphical screens but still ended up with frozen mouse and keyboard. |
[root@HP_Box john]# journalctl | grep -A 2 -E "(\-\- Reboot \-\-|Q33)" appears to show that lt 236 does, and lt-238 does not, recognise the Q33 chipset. Mar 23 22:38:33 HP_Box kernel: pci 0000:00:00.0: Intel Q33 Chipset |
@JPilk Can you install kernel-ml for testing? It has the latest mainline kernel. |
Yes. And it's working. Extract from the journalctl as above: Thanks! -- Reboot -- Mar 24 20:03:29 HP_Box systemd-journal[156]: Runtime journal is using 8.0M (max allowed 191.9M, trying to leave 287.9M free of 1.8G available → current limit 191.9M). @JPilk Good to know that the mainline kernel works. I suggest you keep using kernel-ml. This indicates that linux 5.4 has some problem with backporting patches from the mainline kernel. It could be a missing commit like we have seen in bug 0001334. If we can Identify the source of the problem, that will be nice, but that is beyond what we (ELRepo) can deal with. So I'm going to close this ticket as 'resolved'. |
