Summary0001098: request kmod-usbip support for latest EL8 kernel (4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3)
DescriptionHi:
I've been very successfully using:
     kmod-usbip-0:0.0-4.el8_3.elrepo.x86_64
with the previous EL8 kernel:
     4.18.0-240.15.1.el8_3.x86_64
but it appears that it does not support the now latest EL8 kernel:
     4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64

It appears that I'm already using the latest kmod-usbip ElRepo package:
     repoquery --refresh -a --repoid=elrepo |grep usbip
shows:
          kmod-usbip-0:0.0-1.el8_0.elrepo.x86_64
          kmod-usbip-0:0.0-2.el8_2.elrepo.x86_64
          kmod-usbip-0:0.0-3.el8_3.elrepo.x86_64
          kmod-usbip-0:0.0-4.el8_3.elrepo.x86_64
          usbip-utils-0:0.0-1.el8.elrepo.x86_64

Unless you think I'm doing something wrong on my end, could I request a kmod-usbip rebuild that also supports the 4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64 kernel?

Thanks!

There is an updated version for EL 8.4 in our testing repo. Please try:

dnf --enablerepo=elrepo-testing update kmod-usbip

Hi,

The latest version in the testing repository is for el8.4 so you will need to update your kernel to the el8.4 kernel before you are able to test. RHEL8.4 is out, CentOS (and others) 8.4 will be released in due course.

Thanks.

Thanks toracat and pperry! While we wait for the appearance of CentOS 8.4 (and for some of my clients who are likely to stay on 8.3 for some time), is there any chance that you could also provide an elrepo-testing version of kmod-usbip for the latest EL 8.3 kernel? If not, I fully understand and will cope, but I had to ask. Thanks again!

I will see if I can get something out for you tomorrow :-)

Can I ask - which modules do you actually use? We are having issues with the usbip-vudc module, but usbip-host and usbip-core look OK. Perhaps usbip-vudc is not widely used? Please you could show the output from:

lsmod | grep usbip

Thanks

Wow! What fabulous customer service!

Let's see... I think my usbip needs are limited to usbip-core and vhci-hcd. With my application running, I see this:
     $ lsmod | grep usbip
        usbip_core 32768 1 vhci_hcd
If you could find away to provide these for the new EL 8.3 kernel, I (and my users) will be very grateful! Thanks.

I have built and released an updated package built against kernel-4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3:

kmod-usbip-0.0-4.22.1.el8_3.elrepo.x86_64.rpm

This package is currently uploading and should be available on mirror sites shortly.

This package does not ship the usbip_vudc module, which was broken anyway:

$ rpm -qlp kmod-usbip-0.0-4.22.1.el8_3.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
/etc/depmod.d/kmod-usbip.conf
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64/extra
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64/extra/usbip
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64/extra/usbip/usbip-core.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64/extra/usbip/usbip-host.ko
/lib/modules/4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64/extra/usbip/vhci-hcd.ko
/usr/share/doc/kmod-usbip-0.0
/usr/share/doc/kmod-usbip-0.0/GPL-v2.0.txt
/usr/share/doc/kmod-usbip-0.0/greylist.txt

Please can you test and let us know how it works for you.

Thanks

Wonderful! My tests using this new package work perfectly with the latest EL 8.3 kernel (centos8 4.18.0-240.22.1.el8_3.x86_64). Thanks so much for your above-and beyond help.

P.S. If there's away to provide you and your colleagues with a beverage or two of your choice, please email me instructions for doing so.

@pberger - delighted to hear it's working for you.

Unfortunately, elrepo is not set up to take monetary (or alcoholic!) donations, but we really appreciate the thought and your support.

You will likely need to update the package again when you update to el8.4. We use the release tag (e.g, el8_3, el8_4) top signify which series kernel a package is intended for.

Marking this as resolved
